EnviroTrac Awarded Gowanus Canal EPA Superfund Contract

Yaphank, NY (September 9, 2016) – EnviroTrac has been a contract worth almost $700,000 to construct the staging area for the Gowanus Canal Superfund Site in Brooklyn, NY. The Gowanus Canal is a 2-mile man-made canal constructed in the 1860s as part of industrial development in the region. Past uses have resulted in sediment contamination from creosoting works, MGPs, fertilizer manufacturing, coal yards, asphalt manufacturing plants, tar processing facilities, and oil storage facilities, as well as having received sanitary sewage and stormwater discharges for many decades.

The staging area construction is the initial phase of the Remedial Design Work Plan implemented by the Gowanus Canal Remedial Design Group under an administrative order to clean up the canal by the EPA. The work includes: clearing and grading of the site; sediment and erosion controls; well closure and modification; installing an impermeable geotextile membrane with drainage and stormwater collection components; asphalt paving; and, electrical service installation.

“We are excited to get in on the ground floor of this high profile project and look forward to bidding on future remedial activities initiated by the Remedial Design Group”, says Ted Masters, Vice President.
